Formerly known as Akyab, Sittwe is the chief settlement of the Arakan region-today called Rakhine State, is located on mouth of the Kaladan River from where confluence of the Kaladan, Mayu and Lay Myo rivers emptying into the Bay of Bengal. Sittwe is the port city with a rich hinterland and producing crops, fish and Rakhine Longyis of Rakhine State. It is a long narrow coastal region to the west of Myanmar, separated from the mainland by the Rakhine Yoma (mountain ranges). Despite Sittwe itself has few places of interest, anyway a popular tourist destination in the Rakhine State which is Mrauk Oo can be reached only by boat via Sittwe, so Sittwe is essential point for western part of Myanmar. Before leaving from Sittwe to Yangon, may visit local market, can buy the local fishery products and traditional custom.



Mrauk U

An ancient royal capital and the last unified Arakanese Kingdom, it was founded by Rakhine King Min Saw Mon in 1431, also known as the Myo Haung meaning is "Old City", situated on the western coast, it is bordered by Chin State in the north, Magway Region, Bago Region and Ayeyarwaddy Region in the east, the Bay of Bengal to the west, and the Chittagong Division of Bangladesh to the northwest. In 16 century, this city was important trading port with links to Portugal, Netherlands, Arabia, Persia and India. On the present day, this city offers the visitors much chance to observe the cultural of Rakhine race and archaeological site. Mrauk U is the ancient capital of Rakhine State.

Once taking flight to Sittwe (Akyab) first, can proceed to Mrauk U by boat for about (6) hours. Otherwise, it is also accessible by road from Sittwe via Ponnakyun and Kyauktaw. But just boat trip was recommended for tourists to be convenient. Along the Kaladan River on boat trip, you may observe ways of life of local fisher men and fishing villages. As for the highlights of Mrauk U, The Mahamuni Shrine; one of the famous Pagodas in Myanmar, is situated 30 km from Mrauk U OR as alternative, transfer to jetty by car for half hour, afterwards for about (3) hrs. sailing up by boat along very fantastic scenery up stream Lay Myo River to Kone Chaung Village where can visit around the village to see very wonderful Chin Ladies with tattoed faces with variety of tattooed pattern and their very simple ways of lifes and continue visit to Sin Ke` Chin tribe villages which all are located at the bank of Lay Myo River. More of visit in Mrauk U; Shittthaung Pagodas, Andaw Thein temple, Yadanarpon temple, Dukkanthein @ Htoke Kan Thein, Koe Thaung Pagodas, Pitakataik @ the Library. More of visit Sykya Manaung pagoda, Palace Site; the ancient ruins of Mrauk U period, archeological Museum showing information about the ancient Rakhine eras, Koethaung temple, Ratana Manaung pagoda, Bandoola Monastery, Latsaykan lake and Zina Manaung pagoda etc. When return from Mrauk U and arrive back in Sittwe, can enjoy and relax at the view point beach for sunset.
